When I was in Secondary school, I had two things on my mind; basketball and art class. To be honest art class in S1 is the most boring one you will ever be in, all you have to do is draw baskets of fruit and nothing else. My first ever crush came in Senior Two, he was really handsome but older. At that he was in Senior Four and pretty famous throughout the whole school and every girl I knew liked him.
Morris was tall, played basketball and had this bad boy thing all figured out and man did the girls flock him. Then there was Anne, fair skin with a bosom that her uniform could not hide and quite the flirty type and male teachers were her type. In a way, I wanted be Anne but masked that girl crush with jealousy.
Morris liked Anne, she looked at him like her little play thing always teasing him for the fun of it and making sure he was hooked line and sinker. I hated Anne of course, I wanted Morris to look at me the way he looked her, but I had a flat chest and still had not learned to dress like a young lady. Always jeans and t-shirts, nothing else. Yet Anne had those bell bottom skirts that we called mermaid skirts and kangol capes, she always looked beautiful. The game of cat and mouse went on for a while as all the girls watched on in envy wondering when these two were going to admit that they were “coupling” as we called it those days.
When they were sitting for their final UCE exams, there was a huge change in the relationship. Morris started avoiding Anne and Anne started chasing after him, whenever she got the chance she would try to pin him down for a conversation but to no avail. There were whispers in the halls of sex and pregnancies. That Anne was carrying Morris’ baby and that she was desperate to keep him. Morris on the other hand denied anything ever happening between them, he pointed fingers at the one person no expected. Our handsome and very “Savedee” art teacher and Chaplain, oh how the gossip got juicy after that.
Now Mr. Chaplain was handsome and when I say handsome, I mean that handsome which always makes girls want to have his babies. It turns out that’s what happened with Anne, she used to spend a lot of time in his office and would usually be there till late so it was adding up. Morris also claimed Anne was saying it was his baby because his family has a financially stable background that Anne thought would take care of her. Either way, Anne was pregnant and it was starting to show by the day. After several staff meetings Mr. Chaplain disappeared from the school and Anne didn’t finish her final exams due to shame, she later moved in with Mr. Chaplain and became a teenage wife and mother to his cute mini chaplain babies. Of course Anne didn’t really finish school and the marriage didn’t last, I heard she works in Kiyembe now and the kids are grown.
I do wish she had finished school and bettered her life after that because being pregnant when young doesn’t mean your life has ended. Its just a bump in the road that you will get over, so don’t stop dreaming or supporting teenage mothers. One night of passion should not deter them from living the life they deserve.
